A social community

The Down-Lo is a bulletin board system in the spirit of the 1980s and 90s, reachable from anywhere on the Internet. It is a social community: a place to connect, read the boards, leave a message, and come back tomorrow to see who answered.

Social media sorts people with algorithms, targets them with ads, and rewards abuse, and all of that drives people apart. A BBS does the opposite. No feeds, no tracking, no ads. Just members and a SysOp, getting to know each other.

Chat: the heart of the board

The social side is what The Down-Lo does best. There are three ways to talk with people in real time:

  • Node chat: talk one-on-one with another member who is connected to The Down-Lo
  • IRC: join an IRC server and channel from inside the BBS
  • Multi-Relay Chat (MRC): chat rooms shared by more than 150 BBSes. Like IRC, with more features and a more vivid look

Most days you will find Winzlo, the SysOp, in MRC, welcoming new members and enjoying good conversation with good people.

What’s inside

  • Message areas, both local and networked, linked to multiple messaging networks
  • File libraries, both local and networked
  • More than 500 doors and games, including InterBBS play against other boards
  • Powered by ANetBBS

Connect

The easiest way is right in your web browser:

bbs.winzlo.com

Or connect with a terminal program, on the standard ports:

New members are welcome. Sign up the first time you connect.

Terminal programs

Want the full ASCII and ANSI experience, with the colors, the art, and the fonts the way they were meant to look? Use a real BBS terminal program.

  • SyncTERM for Windows, Mac and Linux
  • NetRunner for Windows and Linux
  • TERMinator for iPhone, iPad, Android tablets, Mac and Windows, with features very similar to SyncTERM

In any of them, add a new connection for bbs.winzlo.com, pick Telnet or SSH, and leave the port at its default.
